Firefly
we were curious by nature
students of the world around us
constantly wondering what this is
or how that works
where does the money come from?
what will we be when we grow up?
who is in charge?
how do we get to Paris?
until one day
sometime in our late twenties
when we have decided that
we have learned all we need to know
as if the world has ceased to
mystify us any longer
for we are obsessed with
making a life we believe
will make us happy
only to realize
well along in life
that curiosity had been
the point all along
and we are left to wonder aloud
where the fireflies have gone
and why does no one
look for them anymore
but they don’t know what a firefly is
because they have never seen one
they will ignore your questions
as the musings of senility
roll their eyes
and try once more
to show you how to program
your jet pack
